Lisbon Airport is seven kilometers northeast of the Portuguese capital. It was opened on October 15, 1942, after WW2 rapid expansion was necessary.
Lisbon Airport has to deal with the rapidly growing amount of passengers and freight. Therefore, plans have been drawn to build a new airport 50 kilometers northwest of Lisbon, a decision about this has not yet been made. However, it has been decided to make substantial renovations to the existing airport. From a study it became clear that the division of the airport and the ground movements of the airplanes were unnecessarily complicated. In the meantime there are other improvements being made, including, among others, the construction of a new runway. There was considerable work done at the Portela Airport, the whole renovation was completed in 2008.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is 15 kilometers southwest of the Dutch capital. It is situated in the Haarlemmermeerpolder and that is also where the name Schiphol comes from. A part of the former lake was named Schiphol, but what the name means is not completely clear. Some claim that it was a place where many ships perished. It is more probable that the name comes from ‘scheepschaal’, a ditch where ships were hauled from one lake to the other. Amsterdam Airport is the lowest lying major airport in the world, it is three to five meters below sea level.
